What's in a name?
The name "Novowels" comes from my time on the lpMUD Nirvana, which I started playing in 1996. In the beginning, I wanted to name my character "Trapspringer," who is mentioned in a number of Dragonlance novels as a legendery member of the "kender" race. Nirvana, however, had a nine character limit on names. After tinkering with the name some, I realized that I could just edge the name in by removing all of the vowels, and it was still somewhat recognizable.

Soon thereafter, I was happily playing as "Trpsprngr." Over time, I began to want a second character as I was interested in some of the other guilds. After a few normal sounding names, I eventually made the character "Rsncrntz" - mainly as a joke. After that, all of my character names began to follow the vowelless motif.

At the height of my playing, I maintained the following characters: Trpsprngr, Rsncrntz (as a Vampire, he was allowed a 'pet' undead wolf, which I named Gldnstrn), Mdmrtgn, Pndrgn, Fstndntls, Mphstphls, and Drkwngdck. As a result of this, people started calling me 'the no vowels guy' for short and then eventually just "Novowels." I liked it, and started using that on forums and elsewhere.

As of November, 2006, I've been going by "Novowels" on the 'net for over a decade. In many ways, it's just as much- if not more of- a name for me as my given one.
